Did you watch yesterday's colourful episode of Gok Wan's 'Fill your house for free?' featuring the most loveliest, fun family Laura, Kevin and little Rita. Their home as you saw was filled with great 70's finds with Laura wanting to create the same feeling upstairs in her home as she has lovingly created downstairs. My brief was to re-design their daughter Rita's room, their bedroom and the spare room to a craft room! I loved the family feel in their home and with Laura's design eye for favourite colours, textures and patterns it was lovely to work with her.
Here is a peek into some of my mood boards I created for inspiration in the process of designing the new spaces.
Rita's bedroom was so much fun to design. Colour, colour, colour with using the pieces we had sourced for free was a great challenge to bring together with a 1970's feel. The team had sourced the free bed and amazing dressing table we used and we up cycled the wardrobe, chest of drawers and doll's house that was already in the room with paint and some new owl door knobs!
The family's love of colour inspired me to come up with a 'colour block' design to open up the space for them as much as I could so Rita could have lots of space and light to play in! The room was painted first of all in cream on every wall then we sectioned off the areas for blocking with tape and started painting! Myself and my amazing assistant Emily painted the sections. The colours really popped in her room beside her amazing array of colourful toys and accessories she already had - perfect! You can also see the fabulous shade Nessa made too with all those origami birds hanging from it - I loved that design!
One of the big aspects Laura needed in her new craft room was storage. She works a lot with wool and paper so this was a key need we had to design for her. She loved the idea of wanting some storage up on the wall so when I saw this unit I knew straight away we could cut it in 2 and use the top part for the cabinet in her room. I know it sounded mad at first but I could really see how she could use it and also it would look inkeeping with her style and give her space to sew and create at her desks. So we went for it and I'm thrilled with the result of the cabinet!
I loved watching the show yesterday seeing the amazing work Jay, Nessa and Max did creating their pieces for Laura, Kevin and Rita's home. It was such a joy to work with such a lovely, fun family and thank you Laura for having me create these styles for you in your home. Hope Rita is loving her new room!
